As the Rolling Stones sing, you can’t always get what you want, but that doesn’t mean you won’t plot, scheme, entice, act irrationally, and bargain in an attempt to eek just a crumb of that something you crave.
Some of us crave pretty big somethings. Love. Babies. Stability. Financial security. A home and life to make and share with another. We covet. We desire. Of course we become ornery when we don’t get our wish list fulfilled.
Eve coveted the knowledge of good and evil; I am certain that apple tasted wonderful because it was taboo. I have a picture of her in my mind—there’s juice running down her plump lips, and with her breath sweetened by the apple’s flesh, she whispers “Here, hon, have a bite.”
Adam didn’t have a chance.

I realized, though, that being Eve-like doesn’t really bring the desired results. Entrapment and enticement in any of its various forms ultimately doesn’t beget happiness. It may allow for a few items on the wish list to be crossed off, but it’s a fragile attainment with inauspicious beginnings. Nothing good will come from that.
