Life's A Five-Ticket Ride

Re-election of W

posted Thursday, 20 January 2005

Today is Inauguration Day, and I can’t urge you enough to contact the President and urge him to oust Donald Rumsfeld

I also think Bush should resign, and I let him know that in a letter.  No responsible leader would have such lavish festivities during wartime, in addition to a time when needy nations recovering from a horrific natural disaster.  It sickened me to read about the ridiculous sum spent on flowers for centerpieces for the festivities.  What’s the point—they’ll only last a few days.  Keep it simple and use that money to buy supplies for the troops. You’re already President—you’re re-elected.  Be practical; and what are you going to owe all of those corporate donors for funding your festivities?  So you can be bought...Just reaffirm your oath and walk down Pennsylvania Avenue.  Show the American people that you take your job seriously—show them that you understand current events by scaling back because of the gravity of the world situation

Can you imagine how much respect a President would earn if he/she actually were sensible?  There’s no need for galas when we’re engaged in war.  Show some respect for the men and women shedding their blood for a war that you wanted by eliminating pomp and circumstance.  Hell, donate the money from lavish dinners to soup kitchens.  Create a scholarship fund for needy students.  Do something other than spend it on ceremonies surrounding a peaceful transition of power when it’s your second term.  There’s no change of leadership—you’re just renewing your contract. Have some class.

I wonder how Senator Kerry feels today; I’m sure even worse than I ever felt the day of the Senior Prom when I wasn’t going.  I hear he had his game face on and was smiling.  I cried all night feeling so left out, so lonely, so unlikable.  My mom tried to get my mind off things, but all I could do was cry.  I wonder how I would have reacted if I had known that particular disappointment was only a precursor of the feelings of loneliness, inadequacy, and isolation to come.

Kerry did many things wrong while campaigning. He really needed to showcase himself and his own ideas instead of running as the anti-Bush.  Kerry direly needed some of Clinton’s charisma.  Bush direly needs some of Clinton’s intelligence. Clinton direly needs the Constitution amended so he can have four more years.

44 years ago today President John F. Kennedy challenged us, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”  There’s no greatness with Bush, Jr.; I hope all of the people who voted for W. are proud of him.  Too bad Bush couldn’t do the right thing for the country and scale back the festivities.

PS: I RSVPd for the Church Valentine’s “We Love Our Volunteers” dinner-dance for one.  I said I wasn’t going to cry; I was wrong.  I wandered around this mega corporation looking at all of the married women thinking, “Why not me.”  I already know the answer, but the question persists nonetheless.
